Update on Police Crime Commissioners

On 15th November 2012, the public across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire will elect Police and Crime Commissioner for their police force area.

These Commisioners will replace the outgoing Police Authorities and their role will aim to cut crime and deliver an effective and efficient police service within their force area.

Police and Crime Ccommissioners will be elected by the public with the objective of holding chief officers and the force to account; effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.

PCCs will be tasked with ensuring that community needs are met as effectively as possible, and improving local relationships through building confidence and restoring trust. They will also work in partnership across a range of agencies at local and national level to ensure there is a unified approach to preventing and reducing crime.

PCCs will not be expected to run the police. The role of the PCC is to be the voice of the people and hold the police to account.

The first PCC elections will take place on 15th November 2012 to elect a PCC for each police force area in England and Wales outside London, and everyone registered to vote in each of these force areas will be entitled to vote.

If you require further information, the Home Office has set up a dedicated website devoted to the introduction of PCCs where you can find find out more and download documents.
